Castle Tioram, ancestral home of the Clanranald of Macdonald

Clan Macdonald History, Heritage and Private Tours

One of Scotland's largest and most powerful clans, the Macdonalds – the Lords of the Isles – left a legacy that stretches across the Scottish Highlands and Hebridean Islands. From ancient strongholds and ancestral lands to the battlefields and landscapes associated with the Jacobite Risings, Clan Donald history remains deeply embedded in Scotland's past.

You can discover this heritage in person on either the 3 Day Isle of Skye and Highlands Private Tour or the 5 Day Isle of Skye and Highlands Private Tour from Inverness with historian John Alasdair Macdonald, PhD. Many of the key Clan Macdonald sites already lie on (or nearby) these tour routes – with the fullest coverage on the 5 day tour.

Popular Clan Macdonald Heritage Sites

Following the forfeiture of the Lordship of the Isles in the late 15th century, the great clan fractured into distinct branches, leaving an extraordinary legacy across the Highlands and Hebrides. For travellers interested in their Scottish ancestry, or simply wishing to understand the history of Clan Donald, these locations offer a fascinating starting point, and most can be visited on my set tours.

  • Culloden Battlefield (3 and 5 day tours): The poignant moorland outside Inverness where the final Jacobite Rising met its end in 1746. Clansmen from several branches of Clan Donald – including Clanranald, Keppoch, Glencoe and Glengarry – fought on the Jacobite side.
  • Isle of Skye (3 and 5 day tours): The lands of the Macdonalds of Sleat include historic sites such as Kilmuir, where Flora Macdonald is buried, the ruins of Duntulm Castle and the Museum of the Isles in the grounds of Armadale Castle.
  • Moidart (5 day tour): The spectacular ruins of Castle Tioram stand on a tidal island and were an ancestral stronghold of the Macdonalds of Clanranald. The castle can generally be admired from the exterior, with access affected by tides and site conditions.
  • Glenfinnan (5 day tour): The historic location at the head of Loch Shiel where the Jacobite standard was raised in 1745. Macdonalds of Clanranald and Keppoch were among those who supported Charles Edward Stuart's campaign.
  • Glencoe (5 day tour): A dramatic Highland landscape associated with the Macdonalds of Glencoe, who suffered the infamous massacre of 1692 after government troops violated the Highland laws of hospitality.
  • Kilmartin Glen and Skipness Castle (5 day tour): Kilmartin Glen was the centre of early Gaelic power in Scotland, while Skipness Castle on the Kintyre peninsula was for a period a Macdonald stronghold.

Explore Clan Macdonald Heritage on a Private Tour

Reading about Clan Macdonald history is one thing; discovering the landscapes, castles and historic sites where that history unfolded is another. On a private tour from Inverness, you can explore the Highlands and Isle of Skye while uncovering the stories of the Macdonalds and their place in Scotland's past.

With a Scottish Highlands History PhD – focused on the Jacobite clans of the Highlands in the aftermath of the 1745 Rising – and nineteen years of guiding experience, I can help bring these places to life, connecting the surviving landmarks to the people and events that shaped Clan Donald. Whether you are researching your family heritage or simply want to understand more about one of Scotland's greatest clans, I can place the emphasis on Clan Macdonald throughout your tour.

3 Day Isle of Skye and Highlands Tour

Culloden Battlefield and the Macdonald lands of Skye are both on this route, making it a good choice if you want clan heritage to be a major part of your visit to the Highlands and Skye.

5 Day Isle of Skye and Highlands Tour

Culloden Battlefield and the Macdonald lands of Skye, Moidart, Glenfinnan, Glencoe and Kilmartin Glen are all on (or nearby) this route, so the wider Clan Donald story can be covered in more depth. On the final afternoon, the visit to Inveraray can be replaced with Skipness Castle, once a Macdonald stronghold.

Simply choose your preferred tour and request a Clan Macdonald focus in the 'Extra Information' section when completing a Tour Enquiry Form, mentioning Skipness if you would like it included on the 5 day tour.

P.S... Anyone familiar with the story of the Lords of the Isles will notice one significant place missing from the sites above: the Isle of Islay, where the chiefs of Clan Donald ruled a lordship that, at its height in the mid-fifteenth century, encompassed most of the Hebrides and a large part of the Highlands. Despite its importance in Clan Donald history, Islay is considerably easier to reach from Scotland's Lowlands than from Inverness. The journey from Inverness involves a substantial detour south to Kennacraig and a ferry crossing of around 2¼ hours, making the island impractical to include within my standard private tours from Inverness.
