John on an ancestry tour to Cille Choirill Church, Lochaber

How do I plan a private Scottish Highlands and Islands clan, ancestry or heritage tour?

Many travel to the Scottish Highlands and Islands to explore the places their ancestors once called home. If you have a clan name, a family story, or a specific area where your roots lie, I can shape a private tour around the landscapes and locations that matter most to you. I focus on using my 18 years of guiding experience—and doctoral research on the Jacobite clans—to help you walk the land of your ancestors.

Many come to me knowing exactly which village, glen or island they need to see, while others just have a general sense of where their forebearers came from in Scotland—such as a clan name. A private tour means that together we build a custom route around your specific family roots or one aimed at exploring the clan lands of your ancestors.

How do I translate my family research into a travel route?

It often comes down to matching your family names to specific geography throughout the Highlands and Islands. For example, if your roots are Morrison (like my grandmother's) then we will be heading over to the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides to spend time exploring Ness.

You bring the specific locations you've uncovered, and I stitch them into a sensible driving and travelling itinerary (one that works with ferry times if they are required) based entirely on a relaxed pace with plenty of time to explore. Take a look at my Clan, Ancestry and Heritage Tours page which has an overview of bespoke touring options.

What will we actually see on a clan, ancestry or heritage tour?

We will definitely visit iconic clan seats like castles and family homes. But for most folk, the real connection happens at the much smaller, quieter spots along the way. We can spend time in old parish churchyards, tracking down family names on weather-worn headstones or in quiet glens amongst the old crofting townships.

A note on pacing: Because this is a private tour tailored directly to you, I pace the days around your preference. If you want to take a slow, level walk through an old churchyard or simply look out over an ancestral glen from the comfort of our vehicle, the day moves entirely at your speed.

Where have you taken people on clan, ancestry or heritage tours before?

I've been very lucky over the years to take many people to places all around the Scottish Highlands and Islands on clan, ancestry and heritage tours. Here's just a few examples:

  • Outer Hebrides: A tour for a family whose ancestor had left the parish of Uig, Isle of Lewis, for life in Australia – we even managed to find his old home and a distant relative!
  • Highlands: A clan and ancestry tour that took us to Cille Choirill church (see header image) in Glen Spean, Lochaber where we knew that an ancestor had been married in the 1790s.
  • Highlands & Islands: All the tours over the years with the "Nova Scotia sisters", whose family left for Canada in 1773. Together we've explored the Outer Hebrides, Skye, Islay and many churches and graveyards across the Highlands.
  • Scotland: My friend from New York has no Scottish ancestry but does have a deep connection with castles and their history and heritage. Over several tour visits we have had great fun exploring many castles from across the breadth of Scotland.

Checklist: How to Start Planning

To help me build a bespoke clan, ancestry or heritage private tour route for you, it is helpful to pull together a few key details before you reach out. Don't worry if you don't have everything—even a simple surname is a great starting place:

  • Names: Note down the key family surnames and any approximate dates of birth, marriage, or emigration from Scotland.
  • Locations: Look for specific place names in old documents, such as a parish, a village, a farm, or a specific island.
  • Connections: If you don't have exact locations but know your family belongs to a specific Scottish Clan, we can focus the tour on their historical territories.
  • Goals: Let me know if you want to find old family lands, visit a specific castle, or simply breathe the air of the glen your family left behind.
