How do I plan a clan or ancestry private tour?
Many travel to the Scottish Highlands and Islands to explore the places their ancestors once called home. If you have a clan name, a family story, or a specific area where your roots lie, I can shape a private tour around the landscapes and locations that matter most to you. I focus on using my 18 years of guiding experience—and doctoral research on the Jacobite clans—to help you walk the land of your ancestors.
Many come to me knowing exactly which village, glen or island they need to see, while others just have a general sense of where their forebearers came from in the Scottish Highlands and Islands—such as a clan name.
A private tour means that together we build a custom route (or modify an existing tour) around your specific family roots or one aimed at exploring the clan lands of your ancestors.
How do I translate my family research into a travel route?
It often comes down to matching your family names to specific geography throughout the Highlands and Islands.
For example, if your roots are Clan Morrison (like my grandmother), then we will be heading over to the Isle of Lewis on the 4 Day Outer Hebrides Tour which can be easily modified to focus more time exploring Clan Morrison links throughout the Outer Hebrides.
Similarly, for those with Clan Macleod ties, their ancestral trail is heavily focused on the Isle of Skye and the Outer Hebrides, and we often take either a modified 3 Day Isle of Skye and Highlands Tour or the more expansive 6 Day Grand Hebridean Explorer Tour to explore the most iconic Clan Macleod sites.
And, for those with Clan Macdonald heritage, given the breadth of their ancestral lands throughout the Highlands and Hebridean Isles, I offer a dedicated 4 (or 7) Day Clan Macdonald Private Tour from Inverness that covers the majority of the clan's most important historical sites.
What will we actually see on a clan or ancestry tour?
We will definitely visit iconic clan seats like castles and family homes. But for most folk, the real connection happens at the much smaller, quieter spots along the way. We can spend time in old parish churchyards, tracking down family names on weather-worn headstones or in quiet glens amongst the old crofting townships.
A note on pacing: Because this is a private tour tailored directly to you, I pace the days around your preference. If you want to take a slow, level walk through an old churchyard or simply look out over an ancestral glen from the comfort of our vehicle, the day moves entirely at your speed.
Where have you taken people on clan and ancestry tours?
I've been very lucky over the years to take many people to places all around the Scottish Highlands and Islands on clan and ancestry tours. Here's just a few examples:
- A tour for a family whose ancestor had left the parish of Uig, Isle of Lewis, for life in Australia in the 1860s– we even managed to find his old home and a distant relative!
- A clan and ancestry tour that took us to Cille Choirill church (see header image) in Glen Spean, Lochaber where we knew that an ancestor had been married in the 1790s.
- All the tours over the years with the "Nova Scotia sisters", whose Macdonald ancestors left for Canada in 1773. Together we've explored the Outer Hebrides, Isle of Skye, Isle of Islay and many churches and graveyards across the Highlands.
How do I start planning a clan or ancestry private tour?
To help me build a bespoke clan or ancestry private tour route for you, it is helpful to pull together a few key details before you reach out. Don't worry if you don't have everything—even a simple surname is a great starting place:
- Names: Note down the key family surnames and any approximate dates of birth, marriage, or emigration from Scotland.
- Locations: Look for specific place names in old documents, such as a parish, a village, a farm, or a specific island.
- Connections: If you don't have exact locations but know your family belongs to a specific Scottish Clan, we can focus the tour on their historical territories.
- Goals: Let me know if you want to find old family lands, visit a specific castle, or simply breathe the air of the glen your family left behind.
