Day 1 - An early start from Inverness to the scenic coastal village of Ullapool where we board the ferry for a 2½ hour journey across the Minch to the Isle of Lewis and its main town of Stornoway (my native town). From there we spend the afternoon exploring the rich history of the Isle of Lewis. Foremost on the tour is a visit to the magnificent Neolithic Callanish (Calanais) Standing Stones that date back nearly 5000 years! Leaving Callanish we visit the 2000 year old Dun Carloway Broch followed by a traditional Hebridean blackhouse. We finish the day at the beautiful Atlantic coastal beach of Dalbeg before our return to Stornoway for our overnight stay.
Day 2 - Departing from Stornoway we head south to enjoy a full day discovering the wonderful Isle of Harris. The drive south along the western coastline of the Isle of Harris is truly stunning and includes a visit to one of the most breath-taking beaches in the Hebrides - if one single spot encompasses the beauty of the Outer Hebrides it's Luskentyre beach! Next it is on towards Rodel to explore the beautiful medieval St Clement’s church, home to one of Scotland's most remarkable 16th century tombs. The late afternoon takes us back to coastal village of Tarbert before we return north to Stornoway for our overnight stop.
Day 3 - We spend the morning on the Isle of Lewis, heading west then north on a journey towards the Butt of Lewis - the most northerly point in the Hebrides - for the dramatic views of the cliffs and the Atlantic sea. We then return to Stornoway where we have some free time to explore the town. The afternoon ferry (where we have a late lunch) takes us back to Ullapool and then it is a final drive through wonderful Highland scenery to Inverness.
Video highlights of a 3 Day Outer Hebrides Tour
This tour is similar to our 3 Day Outer Hebrides and Isle of Skye Tour but ideal for those who have already visited Skye and/or wish to spend longer in the Outer Hebrides (Isle of Lewis and Isle of Harris) with a more relaxed pace.
This tour is only available on Monday to Thursday start dates from Inverness and the route is as described above with two overnight stays in Stornoway (Isle of Lewis).
Ferry sailings are generally very reliable in the summer months, but delays can very occasionally occur. While we cannot be responsible for any extra accommodation, food or other costs that clients may incur due to ferry delays and cancellations, we will make every effort to adapt the tour to minimise disruption. Please note that no refunds will be given for tour and itinerary changes due to ferry changes and cancellations. To date all our tours have crossed and returned over without any significant delays.
2018 Booking Update - Please note that available dates in 2018 for Multi Day Tours are filling up quickly. Also, accommodation in Stornoway (Isle of Lewis) tends to book up quite far in advance so for the widest choice of accommodation and available tour dates I would recommend that you book as early as possible.
