2 Day Clan Macleod Tour (Isle of Skye)
Discover the history and traditions of one of Scotland's most celebrated clans - the Macleods - with a two day tour from Inverness to the Isle of Skye including Dunvegan Castle.
Day 1 - Departing from Inverness we follow the banks of Loch Ness to Invermoriston before turning west towards Loch Cluanie and Glen Shiel. Loch Duich awaits us at the foot of the Five Sisters of Kintail mountains with the stunning Eilean Donan Castle in the distance. After a brief photo and refreshment break at the castle we cross the bridge to the Isle of Skye to explore the magnificent Cuillin mountain range. Our journey through the Isle of Skye takes us to the old bridge at Sligachan for a dramatic view of the peaks of the Black Cuillin in ancient Macleod lands. The late afternoon takes us to the Trotternish Peninsula (land once claimed by the Macleods before those ‘pesky’ Macdonalds took it over!) for stunning views of the Old Man of Storr, Kilt Rock and the Quiraing before our overnight stop in Portree.
Day 2 - Departing from Portree we take a short drive to Dunvegan Castle - spiritual and ancestral home of the Clan Macleod of Dunvegan and Harris for nearly 800 years - to discover the history of one of the Hebrides most powerful clans. We spend the morning and early afternoon exploring Dunvegan Castle and Gardens along with a visit to the ruined St Mary’s Church in Kilmuir, the final resting place of last five chiefs of the Clan Macleod. Leaving Dunvegan we then make our way south towards the Black Cuillins and the Red Hills on our late afternoon journey back to Inverness.
