3 Day Isle of Skye Tour

3 Day Isle of Skye Tour

Enjoy your trip to the Isle of Skye with a more leisurely three day tour from Inverness. Explore its stunning and dramatic scenery - including the Trotternish and Sleat Peninsulas - and discover its ancient history, heritage and culture.

Day 1 begins at Inverness where we follow Loch Ness to Urquhart Castle and discover its links with many of the important events in Highlands history. Turning west we journey through Glen Moriston to Glen Shiel and the Five Sisters of Kintail mountains. Before arriving at Eilean Donan Castle we take a short detour up Mam Ratagan for one of the best viewpoints in the Scottish Highlands. At Eilean Donan Castle we explore its ancient and historic past before we cross the bridge to Skye. Our journey through the Isle of Skye takes us to the Red Hills and along to the old bridge at Sligachan and its great view of the peaks of the Black Cuillin. We finish the day with time to explore Portree where we will overnight for the next two days.

Day 2 begins with a journey to the Trotternish Peninsula for stunning views of the Old Man of Storr and Kilt Rock before we take a drive up the old cattle pass road to the Quiraing. Looking down onto the village of Staffin below and across the sea to the north west Highlands, the Quiraing is one of the highlights of the whole trip to the Isle of Skye. Continuing around the peninsula we visit the Museum of Island Life at Kilmuir. The afternoon takes us across to Dunvegan Castle, home of the Clan MacLeod one of the Hebrides most powerful clans. As well as exploring the oldest continually inhabited castle in Scotland, Dunvegan also has wonderful gardens. Our return to Portree includes a visit to the 2000 year old Dun Beag Broch by Loch Bracadale.

Day 3 begins from Portree as we head south to the wonderful Sleat Peninsula, known as ‘the garden of Skye'. One of the less explored areas of Skye, the Sleat Peninsula is home to a stunning coastline, heather-clad hills and plenty of opportunities to get off the beaten path and away from the crowds. We stop at Isleornsay with its stunning views across to the Knoydart peninsula and where we also have the opportunity to enjoy some Hebridean whisky tasting! After visiting Armadale, the early afternoon takes us over to the remote western side to explore the breath-taking coastal scenery of the Sleat peninsula, before we begin our return journey to Inverness.

What to expect on a 3 Day Isle of Skye Tour...

Accommodation Options
We recommend that you book accommodation in Portree for both nights to make the most of your trip. Whilst we do not book accommodation for you we are happy to help with advice on where to stay and eat in Portree. However, two nights on the Isle of Skye do allow for alternative accommodation locations around the island and if you have a specific preference please contact us to discuss.

** Off Season Touring
The Highlands are renowned for changeable weather, even over the summer months. However, from November to March, poor weather conditions (wind, rain and snow) are more common. Further, daylight hours are reduced. For tours during this period, we may offer a modified itinerary (as number of attractions close over the winter months) with slightly shorter touring days. The itinerary and timings may be changed at short notice to adapt to weather conditions, and on very rare occasions tours may be cancelled due to severe weather.

Tour Option – Return via the Road to the Isles and the Great Glen
On Day 3 we take the Isle of Skye ferry (40 minutes) from Armadale across to Mallaig and explore Glenfinnan, Inverlochy Castle and the Great Highland Glen on our return to Inverness. With this option we would not visit Isleornsay or tour the Sleat Peninsula. Available April to October. Option surcharge - £50 per tour (includes ferry tickets). With this option you could also take the Jacobite Steam Train to Fort William – Information on booking the Jacobite Steam Train

Ferry Sailings (for the Great Highland Glen / Jacobite Steam Train tour option)
Ferry sailings are generally very reliable in the summer months, but delays can occasionally occur. In the event of a ferry cancellation from Armadale to Mallaig for either of the listed tour options we would revert to the standard itinerary and return to Inverness via the Isle of Skye bridge (and refund the tour option surcharge) but we are not responsible for any costs incurred from the Jacobite Steam Train booking (if applicable).
