Isle of Skye Explorer Tour and Eilean Donan Castle

Isle of Skye Explorer Tour This is our most comprehensive day tour from Inverness to the Isle of Skye. It takes you all the way to the Trotternish Peninsula in Northern Skye, home of some of the most dramatic scenery in the Scottish Highlands and Hebridean Islands.

The tour to the Isle of Skye begins at Inverness where we follow the banks of Loch Ness down past Urquhart Castle. After a stop for photos near Loch Ness, we continue along Ness-side to Invermoriston.

Turning west we journey along through Glen Moriston on the way to Glen Shiel and the five sisters of Kintail mountains. The magnificent Loch Duich awaits us at the foot of the hills where we see the stunning Eilean Donan Castle in the distance. Here we take time to explore Eilean Donan’s ancient and historic past and enjoy a coffee break.

Our journey continues as we head out over the bridge to the Isle of Skye, where the spectacular Cuillins mountain range greets us with stunning views. As we drive through the Isle of Skye we have plenty of stops for photos and time to enjoy the magnificent scenery before we arrive at the main town in Skye - Portree - where we stop for a late lunch and have some time to discover its beautiful harbour and town centre.

The rest of the afternoon is spent exploring the north east peninsula of the Isle of Skye, just a short drive from Portree. First stop is the Trotternish ridge, for photos of the Old man of Storr in the distance. Next is a visit to Kilt Rock for an amazing view out across the Sound of Raasay and beyond, before we take a drive up the old cattle pass road to the Quiraing. Looking down onto the village of Staffin below and across the sea to the north west Highlands, the Quiraing is one of the highlights of the whole trip to the Isle of Skye.

After returning back to Portree for a late afternoon coffee stop we then begin our journey back to Inverness taking a different route back after we cross back over the Skye Bridge. Along the way we have stops at the beautiful Loch Carron and Achnasheen before we arrive back in Inverness in the early evening.

This tour is the most comprehensive but also the busiest tour we offer to Skye. While the tour does cover over 250 miles we do this over 11 hours which allows for lots of stops and time out of the vehicle enjoying the scenery. We have 2 long stops on the tour both for 1 hour, at Eilean Donan Castle (mid morning) and at Portree (lunch), along with a 30 minute coffee stop in the late afternoon. Between all that we have at least 9 viewpoint and photo stops between 10 and 15 minutes.
