Clan MacLeod Tour - Isle of Skye

including Dunvegan Castle

Clan Donald and Armadale Castle TourThe Clan MacLeod of Dunvegan and Harris are richly woven into the fabric and history of the Hebrides and West Highlands. Near the north western corner of Isle of Skye, in the heart of the Hebrides, stands the magnificent Dunvegan Castle, home of the Chiefs of the Clan MacLeod.

The tour to Dunvegan Castle in the Isle of Skye begins at Inverness where we follow the banks of Loch Ness down past Urquhart Castle. After a stop for photos near Loch Ness, we continue along Ness-side until the village of Invermoriston  before turning west along through Glen Moriston on the way to Glen Shiel and the five sisters of Kintail mountains. The magnificent Loch Duich awaits us at the foot of the hills where we see the stunning Eilean Donan Castle in the distance. Here we take a short stop to enjoy Eilean Donan’s stunning views and enjoy a coffee break.

Our journey continues as we head out over the bridge to the Isle of Skye, where the spectacular Cuillins mountain range greets us with stunning views. As we drive through the Isle of Skye we have plenty of stops for photos and time to enjoy the magnificent scenery including a stop at the base of Loch Sligachan where we get a great view looking up to some of the peaks of the Cuillins. From there its a short drive to Dunvegan Castle - the oldest continually inhabited castle in Scotland - where we have a 2 hour stop - time to explore the castle and enjoy a late lunch.

Leaving Dunvegan Castle we drive to the main town in Skye - Portree - where we take time to discover its beautiful harbour and town centre and enjoy a coffee stop. After a visit to Portree’s visitors centre at Aros, we then begin our journey back to Inverness taking a different route back after we cross back over the Skye Bridge. Along the way we have stops at the stunning Loch Carron and Achnasheen before we arrive back in Inverness in the early evening.

While the tour does cover over 260 miles we do this over 11 hours which allows for lots of stops and time out of the vehicle enjoying the scenery. We have 1 long stop on the tour for 2 hours at Dunvegan Castle.  We also have 2 shorter coffee stops, one at Eilean Donan Castle for 45 minutes and one in the late afternoon at Portree for 45 minutes. Between all that we have at least 8 viewpoint and photo stops between 10 and 15 minutes. Please note that it is quite a long drive to Dunvegan Castle but we try and make sure you get as much time as possible out of the vehicle. And finally I hope your group doesn’t mind being taken there by a “Macdonald”! I promise to be impartial (most of the time!)
